Unstabilised periscopes are broken down into two categories: panoramic and targeting periscopes.
Panoramic periscopes are used in howitzers and are required for referencing to a collimator or a distant target for artilleristic location determination and for observation. The latest generation of these instruments, which can be found in the PzH 2000 armoured howitzer, is equipped with a laser rangefinder and an image intensifier. They enable day and night observation and can be used for positioning utilising the laser rangefinder. Furthermore, they provide gunners with targeting information, including range.
Targeting periscopes are primarily deployed with armoured vehicles, armoured reconnaissance tanks and gun carriages. They can be used for a variety of missions and they can be equipped with an image intensifier or a thermal imager. | |
